Magical Girl KitCat

The Story Goes...

Nice to Meet You.

Hi! My name is Kat and I began my Ball Jointed Doll (BJD) journey in 2020. What started as an impulsive purchase turned into my greatest love. As a kiddo art was huge for me and my style was very much influenced by my passion for anime, manga, and video games. The “Magical Girl” is a tribute to Sailor Moon, the anime that started it all. I owe so much to Sailor Moon for introducing me to the genre but also instilling in me important values such as friendship, love and community.

Getting Back to My Roots

As a child dolls were never my thing. In fact, they creeped me out. I loved anime and manga but the anime “dolls” that were created looked nothing like the original characters and didn’t help reduce my anxiety about them.

Anime figures were hard to come by until my early adult years. After spending much of my young adult life worried about what others thought of me and trying to fit the “status quo” I got back to my roots.

In 2020, during the pandemic, I spent most of my time gaming. One of the games I played introduced the concept of BJD’s, (ball-jointed dolls) and it sent me down a rabbit hole, one that I am forever grateful for falling down. BJD’s were more than just an object on a shelf, they were customizable, articulated, and largely produced in countries such as Japan, China, and Korea. BJD’s created an opportunity for me to create and grow as an artist, not just as a collector. Smart Doll, by Danny Choo, was and has been especially meaningful in my journey, and without them, I don’t think I’d have taken this path.

Pushing Boundaries

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about this artform is the possibility for growth and learning is endless. I’ve always been someone driven by challenges and with each creation or collaboration comes an added layer of knowledge. Being surrounded by friends, who are also creators, and learning how my favorite companies came to be, Smart Doll reminds me that nothing is out of reach if you are committed. The next big step for me as an artist would be to make my own independent artist doll and find ways to bring value to my fellow creators and sellers.

And Goes...

Inspiring Others

Suddenly I found myself with a YouTube channel, learning to sew, customizing my own doll heads, and the most wonderful and talented community I’ve known. Four years later, I am continuing to master the art of face-ups, designing resin eyes, prototyping doll sized photography backdrops and doll tattoos, there is no shortage of ideas.

I’m thrilled to launch this chapter of my life and grateful to everyone who has supported my journey. You continue to make my dreams come true, thank you!

Commissions

While I do take commissions, I strive to find a balance between creating what speaks to me and working with customers. Here is some information about commissions and what to expect!

  • Proofing and proof approval ensures commitment for both parties. No changes are to be made after the proof has been approved.
  • Most commissions are $150 but this could change based on the make and model of the head sculpt you require and if I need to procure it. Prices may also change depending on the complexity of the project.
  • I can also do body tattoos or markings -price for this will depend on size, whole body versus a small arm tattoo
  • I do not take sewing, jewelry or accessory requests-any of these items that are offered in the shop as a fullest
  • I do not accept refunds

Disclaimer

*Please note that all of my pieces are one of a kind, hand made, sewn, painted or printed. I do not accept or offer refunds/returns. There will be imperfections as I am a human and these are artist pieces. In the event where full dolls are sold or offered, depending on the manufacturer, some will require me to flash cut vinyl, and assemble frames. I do not hold any certification or have a contract with any doll manufacturers, so please do not contact them with questions or issues regarding your purchase.

How you care for your dolls will affect the life of your custom. Things such as exposure to the sun, water, heat, cold, falls, and rough surfaces can ruin or wear away at the paint. Dark fabrics may also stain your doll, so for tattooed body parts, dark clothing and accessories could ruin the paint.
